Character Name: Sindre Myhre
Country represented: Norway
Birthday: 17 May 1985
Age: 26
Occupation: In his second year of residency to be an anesthesiologist at Bakerstone Hospital.
Residence: Clearview Apartments
Ten True Facts About Your Character:
1) Job: If it weren't for the hours, Sindre would love his residency. As an anesthesiologist (in training), he's on his way to having the monetary perks of being a doctor without having to actually deal with people. After all, within minutes all of his patients are unconscious. Also, much less mess to deal with.
2) Coffee: At any given moment, it would be accurate to say that Sindre's veins contain more coffee than blood. He uses his residency hours as an excuse, and it is true that his fellows also have their hourly doses of caffeine. But seeing as he enjoys coffee at the same frequency on his days off, it would be more accurate to describe his relationship with the drink as an addiction rather than a tool.
2.5) Sleep: On average, Sindre gets by on stolen hours here and there. Both his work hours and coffee addiction contribute to the problem, and as a result he is very protective of his sleep. Do not expect him to be human before his first coffee, and if you have any self-preservation, you do not wake him for anything without a peace offering in hand.
3) Family: Sindre has a decent relationship with his father, Ivar, his stepmother, Astrid, and his grandfather, Kjell. Both Ivar and Kjell are similar in temperment: solid, down-to-earth, and practical. Sindre gained his love of the outdoors from them and their frequent camping trips. His stepmother Astrid couldn't be more different from his father. She's a bubbly, upbeat person, and while Sindre respects her, he does not view her as a mother. Out of all his family, Sindre is closest with his grandmother Hilde. She spent the most time with Sindre after his mother (and aunt, see fact 7) left, and she is the closest person to a mother figure Sindre has.
4) Brother Complex: Sindre has a younger brother. While they were close as children, somewhere along the way they drifted apart, and Sindre hates that distance. Though there is currently an ocean and failed communication skills between them, he loves his brother very much and feels very protective of him. He would do anything for him. This brother complex is likely his biggest weakness. Though normally apathetic, he can be manipulated from that angle with relative ease.
5) Myth: Sindre grew up on his grandmother's stories of Æsir, Jötun, and nisse. Growing up he had an imaginary troll friend, Grimm, and he still insists that he once saw a nøkk. His love of such stories never abated, and his bookshelves are crowded with volumes of myths and tales from around the world. Inaccuracies pertaining to myths in pop culture annoy him to no end, though that doesn't stop him from enjoying the fantasy genre. Just don't ask him why he's grumbling under his breath throughout each Merlin episode.
6) Religion: Though much of Norway is Christian, Sindre's family is not. This religious difference is part of what wrecked his father's first marriage, though fortunately Astrid is able to take it all in stride. Sindre has never been showy about his pagan traditions; he figures that what he believes is his business. Though he has slowly come to hate being dragged to Christmas parties, due to several unfortunate events in Uni.
7) Cross: Unless one wakes up in Sindre's bed, everyone he meets will see him wearing a cross pin in his hair. Originally a necklace, the pin was given to him by his aunt. After his mother left, his aunt initially stepped in to help his father with Sindre, and Sindre quickly came to adore her. About a year later, however, she married, and six months after that she received the research position in Antarctica she had always wanted. Before leaving, she had her necklace turned into a pin and gave it to young Sindre, who has kept it with him ever since.
8) Camping: Sindre loves the outdoors. Hiking, fishing, hunting, camping...the real camping, not the drive-an-airconditioned-RV-and-park-it-next-to-the-woods-and-call-it-a-day kind. The few vacations he takes will find him out away from people and in the middle of the nearest forest.
9) Hockey/Football: Sindre played both inter-mural football (the real kind, not the strange American version where you carry the ball down a field and that weird oblong object rarely even touches a foot) and hockey. He considers himself decent at both sports, and he still joins in pick-up games when he has the time. Opponents can always tell when Sindre's had a particularly awful day by the amount of bruises they walk away with, and on those days the other regulars fight not to end up against him.
10) Personality: To those that don't know him well, Sindre is very apathetic. Even worse, he has a fantastic poker face, and he has no problem fucking with people for his own amusement. His tongue is sharp with friend and stranger alike, and he is quick to point out idiocy in any form. However, he is very dependable and loyal to friends and family.
Writing Sample:
Sindre was not above slamming the door behind his newly ex-roommate as the man left the apartment for the final time.
Locking the door firmly, he went back to the kitchen to collapse into the seat by his coffee. Cradling the steaming mug in his hands, Sindre took a long drink. The tension in his frame eased as soon as the bitter taste hit his tongue. He allowed himself a few minutes to indulge, to simply enjoy the drink.
Thank the gods that man was gone, he mused to himself. There had been a brief moment when he had been afraid he wouldn’t, that the man’s clingy nature would transform into obsession when Sindre tried to push him away.
Oh, not that it had been easy. His ex-roommate had thrown a fit when Sindre told him he wanted him out of the apartment. Spouting that nonsense about how he cared for Sindre, how he loved him. As if that would make a difference, when those feelings were what was causing Sindre to break things off.
And then he had the nerve to accuse Sindre of leading him on. From the start, Sindre had been honest that his interest in his roommate was purely physical. He was attractive and good in bed, yes, but that was all there was. True, Sindre missed the initial signs of his ex-roommate’s desire to make things more than they were. He hadn’t thought anything of the invitations for coffee or dinner, just that they had been getting along better. And it wasn’t as if he had ever accepted those invitations. Why walk three blocks to the nearest coffeeshop—notorious for its subpar drinks—when he had a perfectly functional pot in the apartment?
No matter. Sindre wasn’t going to dwell on him anymore. Setting his mug down, he turned his attention to more pressing matters.
He was now stuck with a two-bedroom apartment with a recently renewed lease and no roommate. Yes, he made pretty decent money in his residency, but he wasn’t a full-fledged anesthesiologist yet. And much of that money went toward paying back his student loans. He could manage the rent on the building for a month or two with good budgeting, but that wouldn’t last forever.
He would have to find another roommate. Wonderful.
